The Organisation

Wales & West Housing (WWH) are one of the leading housing providers in Wales. We operate across 15 local authority areas, providing quality, affordable homes and services to more than 20,000 residents. We are a major Welsh employer, with 400 staff at WWH and 300 staff in our two subsidiary companies, a figure that is growing year on year. We have been established since 1965, and we have grown from our first scheme of 49 flats in Cardiff, to over 12,000 properties across Wales. We have three main office sites; Head Office in Cardiff, a North base in Ewloe, and an office in Newcastle Emlyn with the majority based in South Wales. Most of our staff work remotely out in the communities we support. At the moment most of our staff use their home as a base to work from.

WWH are a Systems Thinking organisation and as such are continually improving the way we work.

We are really proud of the fact that our staff love working for us, a lot of this is down to the unique culture we have here at WWH. Our aim is to create a place that everyone wants to work in, creating a working environment where every staff member feels supported and valued. Values are really important to us at WWH, and you will hear us talk a lot about being a ‘value’s led’ organisation and this drives the way we operate and the way we behave.

The Opportunity

At WWH we put our residents at the heart of what we do, and you will play a central role in ensuring that our projects impact positively on residents and local communities. From flats, family houses and extra care schemes, WWH build homes for everyone meaning you will have just as much choice when it comes to finding a home for your skills, talents and ambitions.

This is a fantastic opportunity to kickstart your career in housing development, working a varied role for one of Wales’ biggest housing associations. Ideally, we are looking for three individuals, with a placement in each area; one in Head Office in Cardiff, one in our North base in Ewloe, and one in our office in Newcastle Emlyn.

It is essential that you will already have a degree and, most importantly, an interest in social housing development. Development requires a broad range of skills and expertise, so many subjects could be considered relevant. Degrees incorporating Planning, Surveying, Housing or Construction or similar would be ideal as it will give you the technical grounding to succeed in this position.

As a graduate, you will build your skills over a 24-month fixed term contract, you will be partnered with a mentor who will help you in the on-the-job activities from day one, and you will attend regular training to help build your core skills. You’ll gain broad business exposure and have the opportunity to learn through working in a real role.

In return for your hard work and commitment, you will enjoy an environment focused on your continued growth and development, a good salary, flexible working patterns and a great benefits package.

What will you be doing?

For the first 12 months you will work with support and in collaboration with colleagues across the business to investigate, understand and implement improvements to the way our new homes are delivered. You will be inquisitive, like to understand the detail and have good communication skills to help with reviewing how new homes are handed over into the business, how we engage with residents to understand how to improve the homes we deliver and supporting the team to implement changes required by Welsh Government.

The first year will give you the skills and grounding to work with the regional development teams in the second year. With the regional teams you’ll be tasked to support the acquisition, design and delivery of new homes, working closely with our contractors and consultants. You will have a ‘can do’ attitude, be able to work well as part of a project team and have enthusiasm for learning how the technical aspects of development contribute to creating great homes and communities

Above all, we’re looking for someone with a desire to learn about residential development in social housing and to make a real difference to lives, homes and communities.

Further information about the role can be found on the attached recruitment pack.
